Why World Sanctuaries?

Global environmental trends have reached a dangerous crossroads with new scientific evidence indicating that many global ecosystems are in decline. Environmental decline is exacting a toll on people and even after a decade of decreasing poverty in many nations, people in some parts of the world are pushed to destroy forests and coral reefs in efforts to raise their living standards. Environmental degradation is also leading to more severe natural disasters, which have cost nations hundreds of billions of dollars. Population growth has also led people to settle in flood-prone valleys and unstable hillsides where deforestation and climate change have increased their vulnerability to natural disasters.

Stress suffered by our environment is already felt in the air we breathe, in the quality of water and soil, climate, and plant and animal species. Mobilizing a worldwide response needed to bring destructive environmental trends under control is an overwhelming task, but the world has surmounted many challenges in the past.

With many life support systems at risk of long-term damage, communities of people and environmental non-profits are beginning to reach out to each other and co-create pockets of sanctuary in their own backyards and neighborhoods to reverse these rends before our natural world and economies suffer irreversible damage.

The ongoing co-establishment of World Sanctuaries comes at a most vital time in our earth’s history. It’s existence is sustained and co-created by people around the world to re-awaken our roles as stewards—rather than consumers—of the earth if we expect our world to continue sustaining life as we know it.

Join us in this exciting co-creation – we welcome your co-creative spirit!
